Hong Kong public holidays 2027: the traveller's calendar
The gazetted general holidays for 2027, what each one means for a trip, and the seven long weekends that shape the city's year, from the Lunar New Year substitution to the Easter that meets art week.
Hong Kong's general holidays are gazetted by the government, and the 2027 list is published on GovHK. There are 17 general holidays, plus every Sunday. For a visitor, the list matters because it decides hotel prices, crowd levels, which shops shut, and which festivals exist at all: several of Hong Kong's great days out are public holidays first and events second. Here is the year, with the travel meaning of each break.
The list for 2027
1 January, the first day of January (Friday). 6, 8 and 9 February, Lunar New Year (see below). 26, 27 and 29 March, Good Friday, the day following and Easter Monday. 5 April, Ching Ming Festival (Monday). 1 May, Labour Day (Saturday). 13 May, the Birthday of the Buddha (Thursday). 9 June, Tuen Ng Festival (Wednesday). 1 July, Hong Kong SAR Establishment Day (Thursday). 16 September, the day following the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival (Thursday). 1 October, National Day (Friday). 8 October, Chung Yeung Festival (Friday). 25 December, Christmas Day (Saturday), and 27 December, the first weekday after Christmas Day (Monday).
Lunar New Year, and the substitution
Lunar New Year's Day falls on Saturday 6 February 2027. Because the second day of the new year, 7 February, is a Sunday, the government designates the fourth day, Tuesday 9 February, as a general holiday in substitution: the break runs Saturday to Tuesday. Our holiday listing carries the detail. For visitors this is the fullest week of the Hong Kong year: the night parade on the first evening (its 2027 date follows the annual pattern and is labelled tentative on its page until the Tourism Board confirms it), the flower markets in the run-up, the harbour fireworks that traditionally follow on the second day, and many small family businesses closed for several days while the malls, temples and festive events run at full stretch.
The long weekends worth planning around
Seven breaks in 2027 make long weekends. Easter is the one that collides with the calendar's biggest arts week: Art Basel closes on 27 March inside the Easter break. Ching Ming on Monday 5 April opens Sevens week, and the tournament runs that Friday to Sunday. Christmas, falling on a Saturday with Monday 27 December as the holiday, stretches the festive season that begins with WinterFest in November. Two holidays are festivals in themselves: the Birthday of the Buddha on 13 May is the main day of the Cheung Chau Bun Festival, and Tuen Ng on 9 June is dragon boat day, when the races run at Stanley, Aberdeen and Victoria Harbour. Chung Yeung, on Friday 8 October, is the hiking holiday: the country park trails fill from dawn, which is either the point of the trip or the day to stay on the water.
What shuts, what does not
On general holidays, government offices, banks and schools close; most shops, restaurants and attractions stay open, and public transport runs Sunday or enhanced timetables. The exceptions are the first days of Lunar New Year, when many local restaurants and small shops close, and the biggest event weekends, when the constraint is not closures but crowds. If a trip depends on one date, check it the way we do, against the gazetted list and the organiser's own page, both linked from every record on this calendar.
