Where to stay

Stay where the event is.

The stay shapes the trip. Where you stay decides how far you walk (or ride) to the event or attractions, what you see on the way and how easily you get home through the crowds. So find what you are planning to do and let it set your dates, decide which area you want to be in before you look at hotels, and book early. On the big weekends, the Sevens and Chinese New Year above all, the whole city travels and the well-placed rooms go first.

How booking around events works here

Hong Kong's big travel windows are predictable: the Sevens weekend, Art Basel week, the New Year countdowns and Chinese New Year fill the harbour districts weeks out, while the summer typhoon months are when the same hotels discount. Event stays add a venue to the plan: Kai Tak, the Coliseum, the convention centre and AsiaWorld-Expo each pull the sensible base towards a different MTR line.

Stay near an MTR station and the city's distances stop mattering. The choice is between the harbour strip, with everything on foot, and a quieter base that costs you a ride each way. Decide by the evenings: festivals and concerts are night events, and the best base is the one you can ride home to on the last train.

Where to stay, district by district

In Hong Kong the MTR station matters more than the district line on the map: stay within a few minutes of one and the whole city is in reach.

Where to stay for an event

For the biggest dates on the calendar, the stay advice is written around the event itself:
