Christmas and New Year in Hong Kong: the complete guide

Hong Kong's Christmas is an outdoor, harbourfront season: a Christmas Town under a 20 metre tree in Central, market weekends from Discovery Bay to Stanley, two Nutcrackers, a Disney day, and a fairground that opens two days before Christmas, all closing with a fireworks musical over Victoria Harbour on New Year's Eve. The complete season, with confirmed dates where the organisers have published them and honest labels where they have not.

Hong Kong does the whole season outdoors, and it does it around the harbour. From mid November the city's Christmas builds in public space: a Christmas Town in Central under the Tourism Board's tree, market weekends that hop from island to island, a ballet and a theme park running full festive programmes, and a fairground that opens on the harbourfront two days before Christmas. Then, on 31 December, the season closes the way the city closes every year that matters, over Victoria Harbour. This guide is the whole run in one place, Christmas and New Year together. Our two deeper pieces stay where they are: Hong Kong at Christmas for the festive weeks in detail, and the New Year's Eve guide for the night itself. Here is the shape of it, with the labels our calendar always carries: confirmed where an organiser has published the edition, tentative where the 2026 dates are still to come.

WinterFest: the tree in Central

The centrepiece is Hong Kong WinterFest, the Tourism Board's season in Central. Statue Square Gardens becomes a Christmas Town built around a 20 metre tree, with market chalets, toy themed decorations and an immersive light show played over the buildings around the square, and Chater Road beside it turns into a Starlight Boulevard of lit trees. The Board lists the season again for November 2026 to January 2027; the exact switch-on date and nightly hours were still to be published when we checked, so our event page carries its window, 14 November to 3 January, as tentative, following the established pattern, and it updates the moment the Board publishes the edition in full. Entry is free, and the square is the natural start of a festive evening: Central and Admiralty stations bracket it, the harbourfront is a short walk north, and the festive season page gathers everything running alongside it.

The harbour lights

WinterFest is the centre, not the whole picture. Through December the buildings along both shores dress for the season, and the waterfront promenades become the city's evening walk: the Avenue of Stars and the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade on the Kowloon side, where the cultural centre and the clock tower carry their own displays, and the Central harbourfront on the island side. Underneath it all runs the nightly baseline, A Symphony of Lights at 8pm, the harbour's permanent light show, which the festive illuminations join for these weeks. None of it is ticketed. The way to take it in is on foot and by ferry, one shore per evening, with the Star Ferry crossing as the cheapest seat in the middle of it.

The market weekends

The markets spread the season across the territory, and each has its own character. The Discovery Bay Christmas Market, run by HandMade Hong Kong at DB Plaza, comes first and longest: three weekends, 14 and 15 November, 28 and 29 November and 12 and 13 December, 11am to 6pm, with handmade gifts from local makers, and the ferry ride from Central Pier 3 as half the outing. On 3 to 6 December the Swire Properties White Christmas Street Fair fills Tong Chong Street and Taikoo Square at Taikoo Place in Quarry Bay, noon to 8pm, a charity street fair of stalls, workshops and performances in the middle of an office district. In West Kowloon, WestK Christmas Town brings a Christmas forest, a pet friendly Christmas Lane market and free performances to the Art Park lawns in December, with its exact 2026 dates still to be confirmed by WestK. Last in the run, the Stanley Plaza Christmas Market takes over the plaza and its amphitheatre on the south side on 18 to 20 and 24 to 27 December, noon to 9pm, with some 120 stalls expected and free shuttle buses in past editions: Christmas shopping with the sea in front of you. The Discovery Bay and Stanley dates are published for 2026; the WestK dates are the ones to recheck before you build a day around them.

The season's stages: two Nutcrackers and a New Year concert

Hong Kong Ballet's The Nutcracker is the season's set piece, and it is a local one: Septime Webre's production moves Clara's story into early 20th century Hong Kong, with a Star Ferry ride and dancing dim sum alongside the snowflakes. It runs at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre from 11 to 27 December, with tickets from HK$180, and our Nutcracker guide covers the production and its family performances. The Hong Kong Philharmonic answers twice in the same hall. On 18 and 19 December Maxim Emelyanychev conducts the Nutcracker Suite, playing piano in Mozart's Concerto No. 23 on the same programme, with tickets from HK$260. And on 29 and 30 December the orchestra closes the year with Amour and Adieu, Emmanuel Tjeknavorian conducting Fleur Barron in a programme that ends, pointedly, with Haydn's Farewell Symphony and Ravel's Boléro, tickets from HK$220. Book the ballet first: its weekend performances are the season's hardest seats.

A Disney day

The one fixed point of the season is on Lantau. A Disney Christmas runs at Hong Kong Disneyland from 17 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, confirmed on the park's official page. World of Frozen becomes a winter market, Anna, Elsa and Olaf appear in their winter outfits, and the evening centrepiece is the tree lighting on Main Street, U.S.A., with falling snow and a drone show above the tree. The Disney Christmas Live in Concert! weekends, 21 and 22 November and 5 and 6 December, put live music on the castle stage, and the season closes with a New Year's Eve countdown inside the park. Park tickets are date specific and the visit date has to be reserved, so the Disney day is the one to lock in first; the way in is the MTR to Sunny Bay, then the resort line to the gate.

The view from the Peak

For the harbour lights from above, the season's viewpoint is the Peak. Ride up in the late afternoon, take Sky Terrace 428 as the light goes, and watch the two shores switch on below you: WinterFest in the middle distance, the promenades lit on both sides, the ferries crossing between them. The tram's queues build from the late afternoon in December, so the fast-track combo earns its keep in this season, and the walk down through the Mid-Levels, or dinner at the Peak, makes an evening of it.

The fairground: AIA Carnival

Two days before Christmas the harbourfront gains a fairground. The AIA Carnival returns to the Central Harbourfront Event Space from 22 December 2026 to 21 February 2027, opening at 5pm on its first day, with rides, game booths, street food and live entertainment beside the observation wheel, confirmed by its ticketing partner with general ticket prices still to be released. Our AIA Carnival guide covers the ground in full. It is the season's family anchor for the Christmas week itself, and the one piece of the season that runs deep into the New Year, long after the markets have packed up.

Christmas Day and Boxing Day

The season's two still points are its public holidays: Christmas Day, Friday 25 December, and the first weekday after it, Saturday 26 December. Banks and offices close; almost everything a visitor wants stays open. The malls run their festive programmes at full stretch, Disneyland and the carnival keep their hours, the markets in their final weekend at Stanley run through both days, and the harbourfront is at its busiest of the season. Eat with a booking on both days, because the city's festive tables fill, and expect the WinterFest square and the promenades to be at their most crowded in the evenings. The morning of the 25th, before the crowds, is the connoisseur's hour for the tree in Statue Square.

New Year's Eve: the fireworks musical

The season ends over the water. The Tourism Board lists its New Year Countdown Celebrations for 31 December at Victoria Harbour, and its own season announcement promises the night will culminate in a fireworks musical over the harbour: the pyrotechnic countdown returns for 2026 into 2027, after the previous year's quieter light show. The detailed programme, viewing arrangements, road closures and the night's start times, is published in mid December, and our countdown page is where it lands. What does not change: viewing is free from the promenades on both shores, the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, the Avenue of Stars and the West Kowloon Art Park on the Kowloon side, and the Central harbourfront on the island side; the waterfront districts close to traffic in the evening; the best standing spots fill hours before midnight; and in past years the MTR has run trains deep into the night, with the railway confirming its arrangements nearer the day. Disneyland runs its own countdown inside the park for those who took the Lantau option. Our New Year's Eve guide covers the night in full.

Where to stay

Book the stay early if the trip is built on either end of the season. For Christmas week and the countdown, the districts that matter are Tsim Sha Tsui, for the promenade, the cultural centre and the Avenue of Stars, and Central and Admiralty, for WinterFest and the harbourfront, with harbour view rooms selling the fireworks at a premium months out. Out on Lantau, by the park, is the base that makes sense when the Disney day leads the trip. The hotels page weighs the districts in full.
