Hong Kong at Christmas: WinterFest, the markets and a Disney day
From mid November the city dresses up: a Christmas Town in Central, market weekends from Discovery Bay to Stanley, and a full festive season at Disneyland. Here is the season, in the order it unfolds.
Hong Kong does Christmas outdoors. The season builds from mid November, when the first markets open and the harbourfront lights go on, and it runs through to the New Year countdown over Victoria Harbour. Almost all of it is free to wander, and the parts that are not, one theme park day above all, are the parts worth planning properly. Here is the shape of the season, with the honest labels our calendar always carries: where a date is confirmed by its organiser we say so, and where the 2026 edition is still to be published we say that instead.
WinterFest in Central
The centrepiece is Hong Kong WinterFest, the Tourism Board's festive season in Central. In the 2025 edition, Statue Square Gardens became a Christmas Town built around a 20 metre tree, with market chalets and an immersive light show on the buildings around the square, and the Tourism Board lists the season again for November 2026 to January 2027. The exact 2026 dates and the venue detail were still to be published when we checked, so our event page carries the window as tentative, following the established pattern, and it updates the moment the Board publishes the edition in full. Whenever it opens, it is the natural start to a festive evening: the square sits between Central and Admiralty stations, the harbourfront is a short walk north, and the festive season page gathers everything running alongside it.
The market weekends
The markets spread the season across the territory, and each has its own character. The Discovery Bay Christmas Market, run by Handmade Hong Kong at DB Plaza, comes first: three weekends, 14 and 15 November, 28 and 29 November and 12 and 13 December, 11am to 6pm, with handmade gifts from local makers. The ferry ride from Central Pier 3 is half the outing. In the West Kowloon Cultural District, WestK Christmas Town is expected from mid December in the Art Park: a harbourfront Christmas forest, a pet friendly Christmas Lane market of around 30 stalls, workshops and free performances, with the exact 2026 dates still to be confirmed by WestK. Last in the run, the Stanley Plaza Christmas Market takes over the plaza and its amphitheatre on the south side on 18 to 20 and 24 to 27 December, noon to 9pm, with more than 100 stalls expected selling crafts, seasonal food and pet friendly gifts: Christmas shopping with the sea in front of you. All three markets are labelled tentative on their pages until their organisers publish the editions, so check back before you build a day around one.
A Disney day
The one fixed point of the season is on Lantau. A Disney Christmas runs at Hong Kong Disneyland from 17 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, confirmed on the park's official page. This year's season turns World of Frozen into a winter market, with Anna, Elsa and Olaf in their winter outfits, and the evening centrepiece is the tree lighting on Main Street, U.S.A., with falling snow and a drone show above the tree. The Disney Christmas Live in Concert! weekends, 21 and 22 November and 5 and 6 December, put live music and Disney songs on the castle stage, and the season closes with a New Year's Eve countdown in the park. Park tickets are date specific and the visit date has to be reserved, so the Disney day is the one to lock in first: the attractions page carries the Disneyland card with its booking button, and the way in is the MTR to Sunny Bay, then the resort line to the gate. One practical pairing for the same trip: the park sits on the same island as the Ngong Ping cable car, whose card is on the same attractions page.
The practical layer
Two public holidays anchor the end of the season: Christmas Day, Friday 25 December, and the first weekday after it, Saturday 26 December, when banks and offices close and the festive programme runs at full stretch. For getting around, an Octopus card and Airport Express tickets are both bookable before you land through the cards on our getting there guide, which also covers the airport run. Base yourself where the season is: Central, Admiralty and Tsim Sha Tsui for WinterFest and the harbour, or out on Lantau if the Disney day leads the trip, with the hotels page weighing the districts. And if the trip runs to the 31st, our New Year's Eve guide covers the countdown that closes the season.
