The Nutcracker, a Hong Kong adventure: the Christmas ballet rewritten in its own city
Friday 11 to Sunday 27 December at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre: Hong Kong Ballet's Nutcracker, reset in early 20th century Hong Kong, with a Star Ferry ride, dancing dim sum and Tchaikovsky played live at most performances. Tickets from HK$180.
Every ballet company has a Nutcracker. Hong Kong Ballet's is the one that could only exist here. Septime Webre's production, presented by Henderson Land and listed on the company's official ticketing page, runs from Friday 11 to Sunday 27 December 2026 at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui, and it retells the Christmas story in early 20th century Hong Kong. Our event listing carries the run and the source it was checked against.
Clara, the Rat King and a Star Ferry
The bones of the story are the ones you know: Clara, a magical Nutcracker who comes to life, and a battle with the sinister Rat King. What Webre does with them is local. Clara and the Nutcracker Prince travel through a Hong Kong of local landmarks and traditions, board a Star Ferry that carries them from winter into spring, and meet dancing dim sum along the way. The production has been recognised beyond the theatre: in 2024 it won UNESCO's Star of Outstanding Award and the Spirit of Culture Award at the Spirit of Hong Kong Awards. For a first ballet, or a first ballet with children, it has a real advantage over the classic staging: every few minutes, something on stage is a place the audience walked past that morning.
The music: live at most performances
Tchaikovsky's score is played live by the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, conducted by Matthew Rowe, at most performances, and the ticketing page marks which is which. The published schedule shows live music across most of the run, including the Christmas week performances, with the evening shows on 15, 16 and 17 December using recorded music. That distinction is the one booking decision worth making: if the orchestra matters to you, and at these prices it should, pick a date marked live. The run mixes 7:30pm evenings with 2:30pm matinees and a 3pm Sunday performance, so there is a slot for a family afternoon as well as a full-dress evening on the harbour.
Tickets and the visitor detail
Tickets start at HK$180, sold through the official ticketing page linked from our listing. One detail matters for visitors in particular: tickets are mailed to Hong Kong addresses only, while patrons who do not live in Hong Kong can collect theirs at Hong Kong Ballet's reception at the Grand Theatre from 30 minutes before their performance. Build that half hour in, rather than discovering it in the foyer queue. The Cultural Centre sits on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront at 10 Salisbury Road, a short walk from both Tsim Sha Tsui and East Tsim Sha Tsui stations, with the harbour promenade outside the door.
Making an evening of it
The Nutcracker run overlaps the city's Christmas season almost exactly, so the ballet pairs naturally with the harbourfront lights and WinterFest across the water, covered in our Hong Kong at Christmas guide. A matinee leaves the evening for the harbour; an evening performance leaves the afternoon for West Kowloon, where the museums and the Art Park are a short hop west along the promenade. However you frame it, book the ballet first: December performances at the Grand Theatre are the kind of fixture that local families plan their Christmas around, and the best seats in the HK$180 to mid-price bands tend to go well before the season starts.
