Hong Kong in spring 2027: March, April and May, month by month

The month pages are the most-read pages on this site, so here is the season they point to: art month and the Derby in March, the Sevens in April, and the Bun Festival in May, with the stays worth booking for each.

Some cities have a season. Hong Kong has three in a row. The most-read pages on Hong Kong Happenings are the month pages, November through February at the moment, and the spring trio behind them is the strongest run of the year: March is art month with a Derby in the middle, April belongs to the Sevens, and May closes with the Bun Festival on Cheung Chau. Here is the season month by month, in the order you should book it.

March 2027: art month, with a Derby in the middle

March is when Hong Kong's art world takes over the harbourfront. The Hong Kong Arts Festival's March programme runs through the month. Art Basel Hong Kong opens at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 25 March, Art Central returns to the Central Harbourfront from 24 March, and the 51st Hong Kong International Film Festival starts the same week, from 24 March. Layer in the Hong Kong Flower Show at Victoria Park from 12 March and you have a fortnight where half the city seems to be walking between a gallery, a cinema and a flower bed.

Sport gets its say too. The Hong Kong Derby runs at Sha Tin on 21 March, the biggest day in the local racing calendar, and BTS bring their world tour to Kai Tak Stadium from 4 March, the new stadium's biggest pop test of the spring. The month ends with the Easter long weekend: Good Friday falls on 26 March and Easter Sunday on 28 March, which makes the last week of March the natural moment for a longer stay.

April 2027: Sevens month

April opens gently, with the Ching Ming Festival on 5 April and the French May Arts Festival beginning its spring run from 1 April, then the city changes gear. The Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens takes over Kai Tak Stadium from 9 to 11 April, three days of rugby sevens and the south stand in full voice, in the tournament's new home. The same weekend, Cheung Chau marks the Pak Tai Festival on 9 April, a quieter island counterpoint worth the ferry ride.

The back half of the month stays busy: the UCI Track World Cup rides at the Hong Kong Velodrome from 23 April, and racing returns to Sha Tin for FWD Champions Day on 25 April, headlined by the QEII Cup. If you are choosing one April weekend, make it the Sevens and stay an extra day for the island.

May 2027: buns, Buddhas and two big stadium nights

May starts with the Labour Day holiday on 1 May and ends with two of the year's biggest concert dates at Kai Tak Stadium: Bruno Mars from 7 May and Sammi Cheng from 28 May. Between them, the month's trade and art crowd gets HOFEX from 10 May and the Affordable Art Fair from 20 May.

The date to build a trip around, though, is 13 May, the Birthday of the Buddha. On Cheung Chau, the Bun Festival builds from 10 May towards that day's floating colours parade and the midnight bun scramble, when climbers race up the bun tower outside Pak Tai Temple. It is Hong Kong's most distinctive festival day, and the island fills early, so book the ferry-side lunch and the trip back before you go.

Where to stay, and when to book

Spring is peak season, and the Sevens and Art Basel weeks move first. Stay on the Island side for the art fairs and the harbourfront, near Kai Tak or on the MTR's Tuen Ma line for stadium nights, and treat Cheung Chau as a day trip unless you move fast on the island's small stock of rooms.
